To everyone who attended our Halloween Night show, thank you. It was awesome. Down South Sally performed. So did the Devil (dressed like Pocahantas) played flawlessly by Diane Uy. Jeff Munger and Jambo Land were there. And we even were able to talk to the Ghost of the Purple Barn, his name is Don. Great guy.
Tick's Tacky Spooktacular will be available in about a week for podcast. A preemptive round of applause for Linda on that one! And can we also clap for Lindsay and her skinned pet rabbit, Tara and her six-pack of NC Brown and of course Angie who's costume entitled "www.myspace.com/angie" won her an authentic U.S. fifty-dollar bill.

And how great was that party afterward? Good grief (wiping sweat from my brow). I kept looking for "Bluto" Blutarski and Frank the Tank. Unfortunately they didn't show up, but everyone else in SE Portland did. It was glorious.

Then in one final swipe of awesomeness, I wake up Saturday morning (2 p.m.) and my house has been cleaned. What the . . .??!! Thank You Don the Ghost of the Purple Barn. Seriously, he cleaned my home. Not kidding. He even left a note.

Here's my opinion:

It's Beck saying, "You may think I'm a little weird but, hey look, I can be normal too."

It's grainy and a little rough around some of its edges.

It speaks.

It's actually real rock n' roll (something of a rarity).

It's definitely not Beck's best. Of course, I really don't think we've heard Beck's best yet.

It's a decently entertaining, well-put-together album (also something of a rarity these days).

I have three items of business. They are as follows:

1.) Anyone can lend a hand. But a friend knows when to leave you alone.

2.) On this show, anything goes. Which means it might get dirty. Someone might cuss. Or heaven forbid, pretend to be naked. (Oh my, look how far we've fallen) So I say to anyone this podcast may have offended or hurt in any way... sorry.

3.) I had a third item, but I'm tired now and I forgot what it was. If you have a problem with that, maybe we should step outside. That way I can smoke while we talk about it. I hate smoking indoors. I also hate smoking out of doors. To be honest I just hate smoking. And yet I smoke. Truly vexing is it not?

Now it's a bit confusing, so here's how it works. We have made eleven episodes of The Tick Talk Radio Shop and seven of them are available for your listening ecstasy. This means there are three shows which are not available. (Simple deductive reasoning). They are: shows One, Two and Three. Episode Two was a recording mishap if I remember right. And as for why One and Three are not available, that I couldn't say. (Linda do you know why that is?) I bet she does. And I bet Linda's fixing the problem even as I write this. Except that Linda is at work... Which brings us to shows four through eleven. They are numbered and listed in this order: 1: Show 11 ... 2: Show 10 ... 3: Show 9 ... and so on and so forth all the way back to our 4th show which is listed last at number 8. Also, it is impossible to fast forward through our show. This I'm sorry for. And if you can't deal with it, don't listen. But tell your friends to.

VALERI LOPEZ: THIS SAT!

I first saw Valeri in the front bar at the Hawthorne Theater. I had some good friends playing the main stage that night, but the bands that played before my friends were insufferable...so I decided to wait it out in the bar.

My sister and I sat in the dark, dingy bar and drank Sasparillas. Not the fake rootbeer version, but REAL sasparilla - the kind that makes your throat burn, your cheeks pink, and your stomach warm.

There were maybe 15 people in the bar.

And on the little stage, in the corner of the room was a bright looking girl with a banjo. I was immediately interested. She played the banjo! And she played it well! Her songs were beautiful & interesting and there was something about her that I just liked.
After the show, I introduced myself and Valeri was kind enough to give me one of her CD's. I've been listening to the CD and patiently waiting to have her on the radio show.

And guess what?
Saturday is the day!

Ms Valeri Lopez will be playing some of her folky folk folk banjo tunes for our happy little ears this Saturday.

You know the drill....big purple house, some pizza, some beer. Etc. Oh! Except this Saturday we record at 4. Come one, come all. This promises to be a great show.

sunday afternoon, blue sky, brisk. i'm walking up 39th avenue to the fine grind. in my left hand is a cigarette and in my right, a big bottle of ruby red squirt. i see about a block or two down the street and coming toward me, one of those very typical, very attractive, always pissed-off-looking, portland hipster couples - tight black, slicked back but messed up and in boots. and i panic. when this hipster couple sees me, they're gonna think i'm just a guy who walks around smoking cigarettes and drinking squirt. but i'm not. i know it looks like i am that guy, what with the cigarette and the big squirt. but no. i'm more. i'm... well i may be a lot of things but some dirtbag out on the street smoking and drinking squirt, i'm not. and then they walk past. and... you know what hit me about ten seconds later. "dave, you are a guy who smokes and drinks squirt. I mean look at you, dave. you're smoking and drinking that ruby red squirt. why would you want to hide that from people?" I'm so crazy.

one sunny spring saturday

Our sixth show happened Saturday, April 12th - perhaps the most beautiful afternoon so far this year. This resulted in our live audience being... not quite as... present as in weeks past. Oh well, what're ya gonna do?

Blake Chamberlain came down and talked about his photography and the PDX skate scene. (A video we produced of Blake skating will be available on this site in a few days.) Andrew Kirk brought in some of his scultpures and his ever-present political activism. He even seized the moment to offer up his official endorsement to Illinois Senator Barak Obama. As of this posting, Obama was unavailable for comment.

Grandma Erma stopped by to say hi which is always nice.

And we had live coverage of Mother Superior's record-breaking gun-jump and swan song. Leaping into public consciousness in the 1968 Beatles song Happiness is a Warm Gun, Mother Superior has been jumping guns ever since. Now she holds the record for most guns jumped in a single bound and Tick Talk's very own Natasha Kettlebright was there.

An altogether different show for us, it was definitely one of the most fun to make.

And keep checking back. The show itself and its various videos should be up in a few days. And listen to our other shows. They're over there in that weird little Podomatic Box.

Our next show is April 26th. And anyone who doesn't come or at least listen on-line, will be hunted down and killed.

"The Boss" loves him some Lezzies!

On Friday, March 28th I went to see Bruce Springsteen.

The show was fantastic (of course) despite a very long hour + wait until the show began (apparently due to some technical difficulties).

Overall, the 58 year old rocker from Neptune City, NJ still knows how to rock an arena especially Portland, Oregon's very own Rose Garden. The only issue I have with the guy is that he still calls Oregon "Oree-gone"...Bruce, you friggin' dated an Oregonian wouldn't you know how to pronounce Oregon correctly? Sheesh.

Anyway...like I said, the "Boss" put on a great show, but I find that the only two things I remember the most from that amazing night were these: while wandering in the sea of people to find the right enterance to the floor (yes, we were on the floor) I saw a woman walking towards me in a white baby-tee with these words on it:

"Lesbians love (really it was a picture of a heart) Bruce Springsteen"

I instantly fell in love. With the shirt. Of course.

That shirt was stuck in my mind all night (...that shirt looked awesome on that woman by the way, but I must focus...). It wasn't until the end of the night during one of Bruce's encore songs that I was officially blown-away. I think I belted out the loudest scream I could muster that night after I had heard what he sang.

At one point in the song, "American Lands" he made a slight change to the lyrics,

"the Blacks, the Irish, Italians, THE LESBIANS, and Jews"

I didn't know, until later after reading a blog about the show that night, that a group of lesbians (and probably the cute one with the shirt I saw earlier) were all apparently in the front row holding up a sign that read, like the shirt, "Lesbians love Bruce Springsteen"!

Damn. I may have missed the lesbians that night, but I didn't miss that little shout out from the "Boss"! (Sorry, Martha, I tried to get Bruce to do a shout-out to Kiki, Mata Hari, and Ferocious Eagle, but I couldn't get his attention -- I should have made a sign like my fellow lesbians).

But I think he just likes him some damn hot lezzies! What guy wouldn't, really?

Thanks Boss. I love you with all of my little lesbian heart.

We made our second show on Saturday. And it'll take a couple days to edit and should be available in a couple of days. Andre Blackburn Nelson came and played a few of his songs for us as well as Down South Sally. Thank you very very very very very very very very very much to both of them, in as much as they came through in a huge way at the last minute. All told, it was pretty good... and... fun. Really very good and pretty and fun. And evidently people enjoy drinking tequila. We did a taste test of Jose Cuervo, 1800, Hornitos and my personal favorite, Patron. The results were shocking, just shocking!!

Coffee -- It's The Only Way To Keep Me Going All Day

Coffee always makes me have to pee and I now, of course, desperately need to pee.

Yes, peeing sounds so wonderful to me right now -- it really does. But, unfortunately, it requires so much effort. The thought of having to move from the couch to the bathroom sounds like too much work.

Hmm...I guess I'll just keep drinking this coffee until I absolutely, positively cannot hold my pee in any longer. Sure I have an abundance of energy now -- thanks to the coffee! -- to easily perform this simple task, but I lack the desire or drive to actually get up and pee. It's kind of strange, I know. So instead of using this abundance of energy to get up and pee, I've decided to use it to type this random blog entry instead.

Obviously blogging about how much I desperately need to pee while chosing not to do so is more important than getting my lazy ass off the couch to actually go pee -- it's good to know that I have my priorities straight.

First - Is there anyone alive who honestly thinks email fwds are funny at all, or even worth looking at? I'm just curious, because I'm absolutely not one of them. In fact, I'm the opposite.

Secondly - I saw The Savages and I really appreciated it. In my opinion, as far as Philip Seymour Hoffman goes, he never does wrong. But Laura Linney! She ruins movies for me. She almost ruined The Truman Show. I don't know what it is about her. She just rubs me the wrong way. But not this time. For the first time ever, she was my favorite thing about The Savages.

I'm trying to remember who directed it.... oh yeah, Tamara Jenkins. Didn't she also direct Fugitive Love? I think so, but I'm not sure.

We made our first show this afternoon. It'll take us a few days to figure out exactly how to get it online, but we will. Down South Sally and Jambo Land were both great. Dude came down at the last minute when our own camera ceased to work. He saved all our lives. Or anyway, he filmed our show for us and that was nice. The next show is Saturday February 16. Can you distinguish between Coca Cola and Pepsi. I'll bet you can't. I used to think I could. I was wrong.
